Best Wrestler and Best Match of February 2013

Best Wrestler and Best Match of February 2013

It is the end of the month and that means it is time to figure out who was the best and which match was best.

My best matches list is what I base my choices off of and it is located here:  http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-best-matches-of-2013.html

Best Wrestler of February 2013 - Savio Vega
Savio Vega? Yep, that Savio Vega. If you don't watch WWC, you are missing out. Maybe the matches aren't 4 star affairs every time and you definitely aren't going to see many highspots or flips. However, what you will see is great punches, believable wrestling and believable characters. I don't have to stretch my mind when watching WWC to buy into stuff, and I definitely don't have to stretch my mind to see why Savio Vega is so great.

So what did make Savio Vega so great? Why did I pick him? Savio Vega debuted in 1987 and he wrestles like a heel wrestler from 1987. He brawls, cheats and sticks to simple offense that will work on anyone. Every match he is in tells some kind of story and displays his evil cheating character and it is just awesome. While the luchadors are doing dives and the japanese guys are stiffing each other, Savio sticks to traditional heel tactics and straight brawling to make things work. He uses his charisma to make the most out of everything he does and the crowd is always hot for him. He is a sign that what worked before still can work when done believably and effectively. Keep this in mind as Savio Vega is 48 and is outworking people half his age.

Savio's resume for Best Wrestler of February 2013 is highlighted by his match with the 64 year old Carlos Colon. The match is here -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DA_8tQH60g . The match was pretty awesome for two people with a combined age of 112. Savio stuck to simple heel tactics and moves while Colon stuck to his babyface comebacks and punches to keep the crowd hot. They worked the match really well with Colon getting in some hope spots before finally making the big comeback, only to be denied and turned on by Invader #1. The match was a symbol of how wrestling is not about how old you are or by how well you can move, but by being believable and giving your audience what they want. It is a true gem and a vastly underappreciated match.

Runners Up - La Sombra & Volador Jr.
La Sombra and Volador Jr. pretty much went hand and hand with each other this month. They met up in the Reyes Del Aire final in a great match and even met up in a trios match.  La Sombra had a memorable match with the often lazy Mr. Niebla and Volador Jr. had a great match with the rising Rey Escorpion. Both guys showed why they belong in the positions they are in and I just hope we see more of them. Their match together is must see and both guys literally brought everything they had to the table in a classic high flying match. They both had a great month and had it not been for the Savio Vega vs Carlos Colon match, they would have shared the award.

Best Match of February 2013 - John Cena vs CM Punk from WWE Monday Night Raw 2/25/2013
What more can be said about this match? They turned what seemed like an ordinary main event into an epic spectacular. They went all out and produced a main event that had everyone talking. This was a great match with both guys giving it their all, with extra credit for CM Punk for working sick. The camera's caught all the action including the awesome piledriver and John Cena's hurricanrana. At the end of this match, people were saying that this should have been the main event of Wrestlemania 30. That's just how good it was.

Runner Up - Alberto Del Rio vs Dolph Ziggler from WWE Main Event 2/13/2013
This was a classic out of nowhere. I barely even thought twice about this one and wasn't particularly excited for it. However, this match had me popping big. Alberto Del Rio debuted his new reverse superplex, which is known as the Ultimo Guerreroplex, that made the match really cool. Alberto also got backdropped face first onto steel steps which was a really cool spot. The match had great heat which made this feel like a classic and also had the usual awesome bumping by Dolph Ziggler. I don't know if they could ever do a match this good together again, but I know the next time they do match up, I'm looking forward to it.
